Communication Studies

We Offer a Variety of Courses and Skills to Learn!

In addition to our Oral Communication courses (COMM 1 and COMM 10) that meet several general education requirements (CSU GE Area A1, IGETC 1C, and De Anza A2), the Communication Studies department offers several courses that explore our discipline in depth.

These courses will expand your knowledge and skill in Communication to help improve your civic, professional, and personal lives, and most are transferable and meet other General Education requirements.

They also help you to earn a certificate of achievement or Associates Degree in Communication Studies. Speak to a faculty member or counselor about these courses today!

*For the purposes of the above chart, here is a description of our offered modalities:

  • "On Campus" - there will be regular and fixed-time meetings in-person on campus and these meetings will be the predominant and priority means of engaging with the course. However, approximately 20% of the coursework will be executed online. This online portion of the course is necessary but also relatively minimal. This is as close as Communication Studies gets to a traditional face-to-face course.
  • "50/50 Hybrid" - there will be regular and fixed-time meetings in-person on campus AND there will be a strong and necessarily online coursework componenet. The exact percentage split may be approximately 60/40 or 50/50, and the most common schedule is to have on-campus class meetings once per week. There is a strong expectation for students to be active participants in both in-person class meetings on campus and online classroom and activities.
  • "Asynnchronous Online" - all course materials and assessments will be completed through the college Learning Management System. There is no expectation for students to travel to campus and appear in-person in class. However, there may be some scheduled meetings held online via video conferencing technology.

Communication Studies Department Mission

The ways in which we communicate contribute significantly to the quality of our lives. Our Communication Studies Department faculty seek to create a stimulating and supportive learning environment and to meet the diverse and changing needs of our students, our department, and the college. We are here to help students gain greater knowledge and skill in Communication Studies as a means to developing their own potential. In our classrooms we celebrate our students diverse cultures, traditions, perspectives, voices, and goals. We are constantly updating our courses, exploring new ideas, and sharing information to foster our own professional growth and to provide the best possible opportunities to our students.

Our Goals

  • Value every student as an individual with their needs, goals and learning styles.
  • Challenge our students with a spirit of inquiry, discovery, dialog and reflection.
  • Create an environment where diverse cultures, abilities, and needs are respected and where differences offer productive opportunities for learning and personal fulfillment.
  • Develop a dynamic curriculum that reflects both traditional and emerging schools of thought in our discipline.
  • Provide every student with opportunities to simultaneously acquire knowledge and develop skill through practice.
  • Help students become critical and independent thinkers and problem solvers by providing opportunities to work in self-regulated teams in order to develop small group collaboration skills, listening, deliberation, conflict management, argumentation, problem solving, and decision-making.
  • Remain faithful to our task of promoting personal integrity.
  • Provide opportunities for students to successfully use technology for research and developing presentations.
  • Prepare students to use effective communication skills in their personal and professional lives.
  • Raise consciousness of our global interdependence and responsibility.
