Approval of Notes - May 4, 2021: Notes were approved with suggested rewording.
DASG Report: Grace encouraged all to Join the DASG Senate for the Racial Justice Town Hall this Thursday (5/13) 4-6pm. Members of IPBT were requested to pass on the information to students for both the Town Hall and also the Logo Contest.
CTE Allocation: Informational presentation by Randy Bryant on allocation of funds from Perkins and Strong Workforce Program.
Mayra reminded us of the key question we should be when making budgetary decisions: Are we allocating funds to support equity? Justifications on form and justification on latest Program Review should be stating how such resources support equity.
IPBT will be asked to approve the allocation at IPBT meeting of May 18, 2021.
Request from IIS Division: As the Dean of IIS was outreaching to faculty to form the hiring committees for Asian American Studies instructor and Chicanx/Latinx Studies instructor positions, it came to light that an Intercultural Studies faculty member would like to be reassigned into the Asian American Studies instructor position. IIS Division requests to use the Asian American Studies position to replace the ICS position that would be vacated if the reassignment is granted. This ICS position encompassing core ICS courses is now being known as Comparative Ethnic Studies.
Viewpoints emerged:
- Comparative Ethnic Studies is an equity-focused position and IPBT voted in favor of allocating two positions to IIS.
- If IIS keeps the position to fill the ICS position vacated, that sets the precedent that anytime there is a reassignment the vacated position would be filled.
Dean of Language Arts Answers Questions - Thomas Ray noted that the questions presented to him reflected thoughtful review of the Program Review for each of the two departments, Communication Studies and English.
Diversifying the hiring pool: Outreach is to local area and to local institutions. For example, San Francisco State University for Masters in Composition & Reading embodies the educational values of ethics, social justice, diversity and globalization.
Presently there is diversity among the Communication Studies faculty members. Communication courses fill easily.
Language Arts instructors belong to organizations and attend conversations focused on growing faculty diversity.
In English department there is a high demand for certain new courses due to implementation of AB 705. English classes fill rate is 96%. The student success rate of the department is one of the highest in California.
Dean of Creative Arts Answers Questions CA Presentation - Film/TV also draws from local institutions when hiring faculty whose graduates mirror the diversity of the De Anza student population. USC while not local does share same values on diversity and inclusion and De Anza has hired their graduates. Local studios, production companies and training centers are other sources.
For both Animation and Production there is usually only one section of a course offered making it difficult as in impossible to know if there are 25 more students to start a new section. While instructors working in the profession tend to be excellent instructors, the pay they can receive for a short assignment in industry can draw them away from a teaching assignment.
Animation department is growing back after having lost the ability to teach many of their courses due to curriculum not being revised.
The task of finding one instructor for the entire Production area is arduous and the task of finding one faculty person to teach both Animation and Production is improbable. The equity in Animation and in Production are each below the 5% threshold.
