Time-Blocked Scheduling Task Force (TBS)
Purpose and Charge
The task force is charged with exploring the potential benefits of adopting a time-blocked scheduling model at De Anza College and examining what such a model could look like in practice. Over Fall 2025 and Winter 2026, we’ll research external models, evaluate local feasibility and impacts, and develop a proposed framework tailored to De Anza’s needs. In Spring 2026, we’ll share findings and recommendations with shared governance and the wider campus community.
Clarifying the Concept
It’s important to note that time-blocked scheduling is not the same as the “block scheduling” model used in K–12 schools. In our context, time-blocked scheduling refers to organizing course offerings and instructional time within consistent, predictable time blocks across the college’s daily and weekly schedule—aimed at improving access, reducing overlap, and increasing operational efficiency. We will review this distinction and its implications in greater depth at our first meeting.
Scope of Work
• Review how time-blocked scheduling has been implemented at other colleges
• Analyze advantages, challenges, and operational implications
• Assess impacts on students, faculty, programs, and scheduling practices
• Develop a proposed model and recommendations for next steps
