Sad News About Ben Kanter

October 16, 2007

Dear Colleagues,

I am saddened to have to inform you that Ben Kanter passed away on Saturday, October 13 from cancer. Despite the short notice, I want to alert everyone that services will be held in the Drawing Room at Oak Hill Memorial Park and Mortuary (300 Curtner Ave., San Jose) at 2 p.m. today. The college will be formally represented, and several members of the Language Arts Division will attend.

Ben began teaching at De Anza College in 1975 as a theater instructor, joining the Language Arts Division in 1981 as a speech instructor. He was beloved by his many, many students. Lydia Hearn has reminded us that when another faculty member's sabbatical project involved interviewing De Anza alumni and students, they were asked to name "any instructors who, in your opinion, were especially superior." They repeatedly mentioned Ben Kanter.

In honor of Ben, an education fund will be set up for his daughter, Julie, who is working on a Ph.D. Further details will follow.

Sincerely,

Brian Murphy
