JAPN 1
Elementary Japanese (First Quarter)

Course Description

This course offers an introduction to the Japanese language and culture, with a focus on language as both a primary expression of culture and a medium of communication. Students will develop the four essential language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—along with sociocultural knowledge that is vital for effective communication in Japanese. Japanese will be the primary language of instruction. Oral practice will be emphasized and supported by a foundational understanding of language structures. Students are expected to master two of the Japanese syllabic writing systems, hiragana and katakana, as well as 29 kanji (Chinese characters).
