Personal Computer Security Basics
Course Description
This is a beginner's computer security course for small office or home users. Students will learn to stop hackers, worms, viruses, spyware, and web bugs. They will discover how to recognize identity theft, and other cyber threats, such as Artificial Intelligence. Students will identify vulnerabilities found in web browsers, e-mail, and operating systems, along with how to protect against online purchase dangers. They will manage cookies, restrict ports, evaluate wireless networks, and examine encryption. The course includes numerous hands-on exercises to demonstrate security concepts.

CIS -108-62Z: Fully ONLINE. This is an online lecture, laboratory class. The lecture and laboratory do not have scheduled meetings and can be completed independently each week on the student's own time. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address. Most De Anza classes will use the Canvas course management system. We recommend a laptop or desktop computer to successfully complete the course; a tablet or phone may not be adequate for all assignments and tests.
