POLI 5
Introduction to Political Thought and Theory
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive survey of the field of political theory, focusing on how to interpret, discuss, critique, debate, and write about both classical and contemporary political thought and theory. It examines traditional approaches alongside more current paradigms, especially those that address the perspectives of constituent groups who have traditionally been excluded from mainstream political discourse. Throughout this course, students will develop the ability to think and engage critically with both classical and modern political issues, including topics such as the balance between individual and community rights, freedom, equality, and distributional justice. Additionally, students will explore issues like environmental sustainability, generational equity, the "rights" of nature and non-human life, power, sovereignty, and the state, among others.
