Grassroots Democracy: Race, Politics and the American Promise

Course Description

This course offers both applied and theoretical learning for students of social justice. It will delve into an examination of race, culture, and contradictions inherent in the ideal of the American Dream through a comparative analysis of American experiences of migration. Special focus will be placed on the historical experiences of European immigrants, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Asian Americans. Additionally, the course will address contemporary social and cultural implications of the migration process. Employing a multidisciplinary social science approach, the course will pay attention to issues of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and ecology. Furthermore, it will explore the role of the state, particularly in terms of policy, in shaping the processes of migration and immigration.
