"Forced Migration" was the theme of this year's Global Issues Conference. 

The annual Global Issues Conference provides an opportunity for students to share their research and ideas. In line with De Anza's institutional core competencies, the conference is an opportunity for students to recognize their role as local, national and global citizens.

The conference is co-sponsored by LEAD and VIDA.

  • 10:30-11:20 a.m.: Voces y Manos

Voces y Manos: Addressing Root Causes of Migration Through Buen Vivir

Armando Raxcaco, Jennifer Gomez, Macario VasquezMichael Bakal, Armando Raxcaco, Jennifer Gomez and Macario Vasquez from Voces y Manos will join the conference in a video conversation with instructor Kimberly Vinall.

Voces Y Manos is a youth development organization based in Guatemala that works to empower youth and advance the health and well-being of local communities.

Michael BakalMichael Bakal is passionate about working with young people to help them create social change,. As a student attending the University of California, San Diego, he participated in a volunteer delegation led by the American Jewish World Service to work with Fundación Nueva Esperanza in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. Inspired by the organization’s efforts to promote a model of education centered around a Maya worldview, Michael co-founded Voces y Manos, along with partners in Rabinal and at UC San Diego, to support FNE’s work expanding access to education for Mayan youth. 

Subsequently, he has worked at Fundación Nueva Esperanza as a classroom science teacher and at Voces y Manos to develop and implement a youth participatory action-research (YPAR) curriculum. In the United States, Michael has worked at a high school science teacher and as a public health advocate with a focus on strategic communications. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley's Graduate School of Education, where he studies youth learning and activism.

With co-workers at Voces y Manos, he has been working to develop curriculum focused on the concept of Buen Vivir, an indigenous framework for understanding just and sustainable relationships among human communities and between humans and the natural world. He has published editorials in the Sacramento Bee and Truthout.

  • Felipe works at the Center on Gender and Refugee Studies and has represented clients before the Department of Homeland Security in family-based immigration matters.
  • Rosario is a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants who has led campaigns to mobilize the Latino vote in Oakland and bring the city into negotiations on budget equity.

It is our hope that the workshops in the conference present an opportunity to participate in the democratic process, practice respect for social and cultural diversity, appreciate the complexity of the physical world, and understand the significance of environmental sustainability
