Quick Notes for the Week of June 17


Graduation Reminders

If you’re planning to graduate this year, you must file the degree application by the end of the day today – June 17 – if you want to have your name listed in the printed commencement program.

Here are some other deadlines to keep in mind:

  • Purchase graduation packs – including cap, gown, tassell and diploma cover – and other regalia by Thursday, June 27. Orders must be made in person as shipping is no longer available. Some sizes may sell out early.
  • Submit a message and photo for the optional Graduation Slideshow no later than Monday, June 24.

De Anza will hold its 57th annual commencement on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Santa Clara Convention Center. Be sure to check deanza.edu/graduation for the latest updates and announcements. There is no deadline to participate in the commencement ceremony, but you must apply for your degree by June 28 in order to have it awarded for spring quarter.

Everyone is invited to submit digital Congrats Cards for a favorite grad, or the entire Class of 2024.

Celebrations Begin This Week

Many programs and Learning Communities are hosting end-of-year activities to honor and celebrate their students. Here are some coming up:

  • EOPS / CARE / NextUP / Guardian Scholars End-Of-Year Celebration – Thursday, June 20, 1-3 p.m., Conference Rooms A&B
  • Latinx Graduation – Friday, June 21, 6-8 p.m., Campbell Heritage Theatre
  • Student Film and Video Show – Friday, June 21, 7-9 p.m., VPAC
  • Red Wheelbarrow Student Edition Launch – Wednesday, June 26, 6-7 p.m., online via Zoom
  • Auto Tech Graduation Breakfast – Thursday, June 27, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Conference Rooms A&B
  • Nursing Pinning Ceremony – Thursday, June 27, 1-3 p.m., VPAC
  • Veterans Transfer and Graduation Dinner – Friday, June 28, 5-7 p.m., Conference Rooms A&B

This Week

Music Department Events

auditorium seats seen from stageThe Music Department is hosting several events in the upcoming weeks. There will be two free events today, Monday, June 17 – a chamber music performance in A-11 at 12:30 p.m. and an “Evening of Jazz” in the VPAC at 7:30 p.m. This Friday, June 21, there will also be a free vocal recital in A-11 at 3:30 p.m.

Lastly, there will be a free Piano Extravaganza in A-11 this Sunday, June 23, at 3:30 p.m. More information on the Music Department events webpage.

DASG De-Stress Week Starts Today

DASG logoDASG is hosting a variety of activities this week to help students de-stress this quarter! Each day, from noon to 2 p.m., students can stop by the Fireside Lounge for the de-stress event of the day.

Today, June 17, you can try out arts and crafts and get free boba tea and ice cream! Tomorrow, June 18, there will be therapy dogs and more boba tea in the lounge. Lastly, this Thursday, June 20, students can participate in a Smash Brothers video game showdown and enjoy boba. Find more information on the college events calendar.

Peace Meals Tasting Event Tomorrow

Peace Meals Unlimited will be visiting the Food Pantry in RSS 127 tomorrow, June 18, at noon for a tasting event. All registered students are welcome to grab a hot meal to sample Peace Meals Unlimited’s fall offerings. Peace Meals Unlimited is part of the India Heritage Foundation.

45th Annual Student Film Show

The 45th annual Student Film and Video Show, hosted by the Film/TV Department, is this Friday, June 21, at 7 p.m. The event celebrates the best narrative, nonfiction, experimental and animated shorts and screenplays produced by Film/TV students this academic year.

The annual Chadwick Okamoto Awards in animation, production and screenwriting and the screenplay competition award winners will also be announced at the event. Admission is free for the event, which will take place in the VPAC. Please call 408.864.8391 for more information.


Awards and Accomplishments

Luotto Literature Prize Winners

Jim LuottoThree students have won cash awards in this year's Jim Luotto Literature Prize competition, held in honor of a longtime English instructor, Jim Luotto, who died in 2020. The contest recognizes outstanding essays written by De Anza students about works of literature. This year’s winners are

  • First prize ($300): Romie Asplund, “To Write Is To Weave: The Tapestry of Trust as Told by the Dialogic Narrator”
  • Second prize ($200): Lydia Ramirez, “More Than Close Friends”
  • Third prize ($100): Sara Twiggs, “Who Ain’t a Slave? Landlords”

Asplund’s essay will also be published in the 2024 student edition of the Red Wheelbarrow literary magazine.

Rising Scholar Selected for King Internship

Aurelio CardenasDe Anza student Aurelio Cardenas has been selected for a paid summer internship with the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. Cardenas, a history major participating in De Anza’s Rising Scholars program, will be interning at the institute for eight weeks this summer.

The institute is working with the Atlanta-based King Center to compile and publishing a comprehensive, 14-volume collection of the papers of Martin Luther King Jr.


Education Forum This Thursday

Forum with Rep. Khanna and Trustee Ahrens

Ro KhannaPlease join Congressman Ro Khanna and Foothill-De Anza district Trustee Patrick Ahrens for an education forum:

  • This Thursday, June 20
  • 11 a.m-noon
  • Visual & Performing Arts Center (VPAC)

Patrick AhrensThey will discuss topics such as increasing access to higher education and addressing the student loan crisis.
